From Guessing to Getting It: Our Beckhoff Breakthrough

TL;DR

We took time away from active projects to focus on Beckhoff training—not because we had to, but because strong partnerships aren’t built by chance. They develop when people show up, ask questions, and take the time to understand the tools they use and the people behind them. The result? A better understanding of Beckhoff’s platform, a stronger relationship with their team, and new insights into how we can deliver smarter, more responsive solutions for our customers.

If you want to build stronger systems, start with stronger partnerships. And maybe add a bit of structured text on the side.

Earlier this month, four of our engineers stepped away from their day-to-day work to spend three days immersed in Beckhoff’s platform, covering motion control, safety, diagnostics, scripting, and gaining hands-on experience with a different approach to automation.

This wasn’t about merely checking boxes or chasing a certification. It was about taking the time to learn, connect, and demonstrate our commitment to understanding how Beckhoff approaches automation, not just how their technology works.

In this post, we’re sharing Beckhoff training insights straight from the engineers who attended: the surprises, the challenges, and what they’re bringing back to their daily work.

What We Learned (and What We Weren’t Expecting)

We came in familiar with the basics. We left with a deeper understanding—and a few surprises.

Here’s what stood out:

💬 Scripting Isn’t Optional — It’s the Main Event

Beckhoff emphasizes structured text, and this training made that clear from the beginning. For some of our engineers, it was a fun throwback to a college-era programming mindset. For others, it was a reminder that auto-complete is a valuable tool not to be taken for granted.

But kidding aside, the scripting-first approach gave us a lot of flexibility—and a greater appreciation for the structure behind the system.

⚡ EtherCAT Leaves a Powerful First Impression

Fast, flexible, and surprisingly easy to work with, EtherCAT proved its reputation. Our team valued the clarity of diagnostics and how much cleaner the architecture can be when it’s designed with EtherCAT in mind.

🔧 The Hardware Is Capable—But There Are Gotchas

We identified some key differences compared to other platforms we use. Hot-swapping hardware? Not as straightforward. Bulk tag imports? Not as easy as we hoped. But with some creative problem-solving (and a few emails to support), these are solvable.

📚 The Documentation Game Is Strong

Say what you will about structured text, but Beckhoff’s online knowledge base impressed the team. Clear, detailed, and searchable—just the way engineers like it.

🎯 It’s a Platform with Great Potential—for Us and Our Customers

After completing training, our team felt confident handling Beckhoff-based projects with little outside support. We also identified clear opportunities where Beckhoff’s flexibility and price make it an excellent fit, especially as a communication hub in multi-vendor setups.

Looking back, the most valuable part of the experience wasn’t just learning the mechanics; it was understanding the mindset. We came in expecting to improve our technical skills, and we did. But more than that, we left with a clearer understanding of how Beckhoff views control systems—and how we can adapt to that approach to build better, more responsive solutions.

Why This Matters for the Partnership

This training wasn’t just about learning a platform. It was about putting in the effort to become a better collaborator.

We’ve been working more often with Beckhoff, especially on modernization projects that need speed, flexibility, and scalability. Even with a trusted platform, things go more smoothly when you take the time to understand how it works behind the scenes.

And when people see you’re dedicated to doing it right, you move from just being another integrator to building genuine trust.

One thing that stood out during this training and in our broader experience with Beckhoff is the level of connection within their team. As a family-owned company with vertically integrated operations, they handle everything from manufacturing to sales and support. This structure means fewer handoffs, faster responses, and a team that often resolves problems before anyone even realizes they exist. It’s the kind of responsiveness that makes you pause and wonder if they’ve read your mind —or your inbox.

Shifting out of project mode for a few days of hands-on training might seem disruptive, but in reality, it gave us space to reconnect, refocus, and improve. It turns out that stepping away from a control cabinet now and then isn’t such a bad thing. This kind of investment helps strengthen the working relationships that make real-world projects run more smoothly for everyone involved.

It gives our engineers a deeper understanding of the tools we use, a better sense of how those tools behave in real-world situations, and an opportunity to learn directly from the people behind the platform. That kind of context sticks—and it makes us better at what we do.

We’re thankful to the Beckhoff team for creating space for learning, questions, and genuine connection. Some of the best conversations didn’t happen in a lab —they occurred over food, drinks, and shared stories from the field. We’re excited to apply what we’ve learned to the next project—and the one after that.
